NZOC and Samsung bring a mobile Olympic Museum to Queenstown
11 June 2012 – Every four years the best athletes from around the globe gather to take part in the world’s greatest sporting competition: the Olympic Games. This year our Kiwi athletes will assemble in London to fly the flag and continue our proud Olympic tradition.
To celebrate, Samsung in association with the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) is bringing the Samsung Experience Truck to Queenstown – a mobile Olympic museum experience that gives people a chance to get up close and personal with Kiwi athletes and New Zealand’s proud Olympic history.
The 18-metre long, 28-tonne truck is on a nationwide tour and will be in Queenstown from Thursday 21 June to Sunday 24 June. It features a range of interactive digital experiences using the latest Samsung technology and is designed to get Kiwis involved in the 2012 Games.
Visitors to the Samsung Experience Truck can wear a replica Olympic gold medal or hold Olympic Games torches as the crowd roars in the background. They can then share images with family and friends via Facebook.
Those wanting to take a look back in time can browse iconic New Zealand Olympic moments spanning more than 100 years of Olympic history using a specially designed mobile app. Olympic memorabilia – including the shoes Peter Snell wore to train in the lead up to the 1964 Tokyo Games – will also be on display.
Visitors can also view the NZOC’s 2012 Olympic ‘Proud Moments’ campaign where Kiwis, including athletes and celebrities, share their thoughts on what makes them proud to be a New Zealander to help inspire our athletes for combat in London. You can also take part in various games designed to test your sporting prowess.
Queenstown has never seen a truck quite like this before!
Don Renwick, Samsung New Zealand Corporate Marketing Manager, says the company sought to create an experience that would bring the Games closer to all New Zealanders.
“We wanted to create an Olympics experience that all Kiwis could enjoy to help build excitement for the 2012 games and support our New Zealand team.
“We’re delighted to be working with the NZOC and are proud to be a part of New Zealand’s campaign at the London 2012 Olympic Games.”
According to Kereyn Smith, Secretary General of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, the Samsung Experience Truck mixes the prestige of New Zealand’s Olympic past with the excitement of the 2012 Games.
“It’s great to see that thousands of Kiwis can now experience the magic of the games and New Zealand’s Olympic history. The Samsung Experience truck and its interactive displays will go a long way in helping to bring the Olympic Games to life.”
Samsung New Zealand is the official communications partner for the New Zealand Olympic and Youth Olympic Games teams and the official mobile communications partner of the New Zealand Olympic Committee. It is also the official partner for the New Zealand London 2012 Olympics campaign.
Globally, Samsung has been the official wireless telecommunications equipment partner for the Olympic Games for more than 20 years. In 2011, Samsung announced it had appointed football legend David Beckham as the company’s global ambassador for the London 2012 Olympics.
The Samsung Experience Truck is open to the public at the Ballarat St carpark in Queenstown:
- Thursday 21 June from 10am-2pm
- Friday 22, Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 June from 10am-8.30pm.
