10 Questions with Jay Reeve

After six years on air together, Jay Reeve and Paul Flynn aka The ZM Drive Show, are consciously uncoupling. Jay will embark on a new challenge, joining the Hauraki family. We ask Jay about his latest radio adventure and life in general.

1.  What's your new role at Hauraki?

It basically involves me getting up bloody early and talking about stuff I love and playing music I'd listen to if I was still in bed! I host a new show called Hauraki Early Edition from 5am-6am week days.

2.  What’s something surprising that most people wouldn’t know about you?

The only qualification I have is in primary teaching. It took me three years at Uni to get it and since completing the degree I have never taught in a primary school. I did, however, teach Home Economics (yep, you read that right - cooking) at my old high school, Tauranga Boys College.

3.  What’s the best part about being a new dad and having twins?

I have led a really selfish, sometimes reckless, life up until this point. When the boys arrived all of this was put in perspective for the first time. There truly isn't a better thing I could ever ask for than these two little fellas in my life. Seeing a smile on their face for the first time just melted me. I just hope I can be at least half the father that my own Dad is to me.

4.  What is your first pick - football, rugby or rugby league?

For me rugby union and rugby league are first equal. The Football World Cup showed us truckloads of talented individuals but with all the 'diving' that goes on it just makes it unwatchable.

5.  Being a music fan, what’s the prime record in your collection you could listen to anytime, anyplace?

The Strokes - Is this it.

6.  Now that the sun is shining, describe your ideal Kiwi summer?

In and around the water at Mt Maunganui, surfing, fishing, spear fishing. Hanging out with my family and the lads, long runs on my Harley. This summer will hopefully be the first time I get on my rigid Triumph Chopper that I have been building with my buddies for the last couple of years. We all know a Kiwi summer isn't complete without BBQs, beers and bare foot bowls.

7.  What’s the most disastrous or embarrassing interview you’ve given on air?

Most interviews I undertake are generally disastrous, the most memorable one was probably with P-Money in the early hours of the morning. I'd had a few yeasts and was struggling to form any type of question worth answering to the point where Pete actually said 'Jay, this is the shittest interview I have ever had'.

8.  How did you win over Anna when you first met?

When I met Anna I was living out of my car, so at the end of the night I simply suggested 'Back to yours then, aye?' She politely declined my advance, not one to give up easily, I jumped in the cab with her and like a lone cheetah wearing down a gazelle I finally convinced her it was a good idea.

9.  What would your dream car and roady destination be?

The Mercedes G63 6x6 would put some lead in my pencil. Loaded with boards I'd hit the far North for a Shippies mission. The fact they cost about the same as a Ponsonby villa aside, they are a weapon! Shipwreck Bay and the surrounding northland beaches are incredible. If I was able to change the car for a bike, I’d grab a rigid knucklehead Harley chopper, springer front end and big king and queen seat. Then ride all over the South Island on it during summer... Heaven!

10.  What will you miss most about not working with Flynny?

Flynny is one of the most genuine kiwi blokes you could ever come across. He is perpetually happy, no one works harder and he sees the funny side of everything. Even though he is by far the worst out of the two of us when we have a few beers, he has a great moral compass on him. Who wouldn't miss him?
