Vibe
Welcome to another Auckland bar that’s recognised the mainstream potential in craft beer. Formerly the cavernous Ponsonby Belgian Beer Café, Three Lamps retains its European bistro feel, but with generic dance music and TV screens showing Juice TV, the ambience is very different from other established craft locations like Galbraith’s Ale House or Brothers Beer.
Service
Professional and motivated on just their second day of opening. Let’s hope they can keep up the great attitude and service.
What's On Tap
Twelve different taps showcase four brews from Emerson’s, Three Lamps’ more mainstream beers and cider, and a guest selection of interesting brews from independent craft brewers. At the moment that includes Epic’s superhoppy Armageddon IPA and Yeastie Boys’ excellent Hud-a-wa’ Amber Ale. The bottled beer list is one of Auckland’s best with more than 200 different brews. We like the wide range of American beers, but a few more interesting Aussie craft beers by the bottle wouldn’t go amiss.
Feeling Peckish?
With interesting bar snacks like crab sliders and a ham hock terrine, the influence of Ponsonby’s more sophisticated dining scene is evident on Three Lamps’ bistro-style menu. Fresh oysters and clams, and larger meals like braised pork hock and corn-fed chicken are also aiming higher than your average neighbourhood pub.
The Bottom Line
With a strong focus on food and an expansive list of craft beers, Three Lamps Bar & Eatery is an interesting addition to Ponsonby Road. To get keen craft beer drinkers returning though, the guest taps supporting independent Kiwi brewers will need to be changed out on a regular basis.
