I see this name Ashley come up in quite a few Comments, and good on you for speaking out.
But I think your implied criticism is a bit out of line. Why, because he has made his money elsewhere, should he be crticised for saying what is painfully obvious to most of us. We need to find ways to keep our skilled and brightest people here, not have them drift overseas.
Stephen is using his skills to build the economies of Eastern Europe and now increasingly, North Africa, because he did drift off. The KEA Organisation is chock full of talneted Kiwis making their mark, and some their millions, in other countries.
If we can only face up to some of the triggers which drive them away, the country will be the better for it.
Political correctness. High taxes yet also steep Student Loan debts as well. If tax was low and we had student loans, or tax was high but no student loans, fine.
Social engineering (read Dog Chipping, Anti smacking, shower nozzle outputs, safety signs on farmers fences as examples).
He points to comparisons so often made with Singapore, Ireland, what is wrong with following some of their leads? More about Inspirational speech by NZ's wealthiest Ex-Pat
But what a cynical action by a senior politician who obviously knew that his days were numbered.
Do they not have some sort of fiscal responsibility? Is there no way to extract a pound of flesh for this behaviour, which now leaves the country in its grip for several years, as we read that report? More about Cullen's scorched earth policy has succeeded
So this story rolls on. The proposed speed that the Government is indicating is at least a step forward. Having these things take years to get settled does add a huge extra cost, and possibly the original motivation gets lost in the muddied water that results.
One can only hope and pray that the expected cost savings do eventuate! More about Should the Auckland Super City include automatic rights to Seats for Maori?
It seems to me though, that the corner Dairy or small Superette has been the target of the robberies and violence, and often alcohol is the thing that brings in the thugs. I have not heard of a major supermarket or Liquor Store being done over.
I also think that there is plenty of competition in this sector, so that the little guy is not a critical factor in keeping prices down. But a few of those small operators are the ones who damage things for the rest by selling to under age kids, stocking bongs and drug use equipment and so on.
Alcohol has been a social problem for a long time, and no way do I suggest going back to prohibition. But a higher level or outlet does help reduce the crime/violence level I feel sure. More about Should supermarkets lose right to sell alcohol
It will be interesting to follow this case through, and see just how real the accusations are. If he is convicted, then there is reason to question why it did take so long to bring it to trial.
If he is acquitted, then the delay has not really impacted on anyone except perhaps himself, as he went into the election with this stigma hanging over him. More about Former MP Phillip Field accused of bribery and corruption.
