  • Britain's Abu Ghraib

The strange things about war crimes such as these, including all of the ones that we've decried from the USA, is what is being done to prevent it? Less importantly (in my eyes) is the punishment because not only does that mean the prisoners have already undergone inhumane treatment, but soldiers who represent their culture would be revealed as dishonourable. Prevention is the key and although it is a complex thing to even consider, there must be a way to stop the damage from occurring, instead of merely thinking 'damage control'. As a person that designs architecture amongst many other creative things, I've found just getting away from your usual space helps clear the mind. And this almost has to be on-your-own time. More about The No. 1 Habit of Highly Creative People

I've found that with big projects (and I've had my share of them!) it is definitely useful to have that bigger picture goal as well because it ties in a whole heap of enthusiasm and spirit to the long journey. The small steps should all be very focussed to moving towards that goal, not backwards or off on a unforeseen tangent. More about Empire Building and the Art of Small Steps

Let's not complain about every little thing now... especially little kid related. Unfortunately the papers never have enough real news around here and have to take up articles like this. More about The penis is too large

  • McCarten on Whanua Ora

There's a lot of stigma around privatisation. One of the prime questions is if private providers, who often have a business/financial oriented approach to social services, are truly doing what's best for the people in need (especially the financially desperate).

There's a whole sector of NGOs that tackle a variety of "pressing issues". They go without government funding but still do a hell of a good job. When the government turns its back on that sector, they will eventually devise some system of their own, as what seems to be happening here with a "one stop shop". It is a waste of resources, a waste of what is already out there. Why the government doesn't try to coordinate the existing non-government services a little, I haven't a clue, but I have a strange suspicion projects like this will become a cheap billboard saying "the government's doing something about it!" when it isn't really working to the best standard. • Flying the Fern Flag

Last post: Bobby on 14.03.11 at 01:45 | Started by Paul on 17.01.10

So much fuss over a flag. My point isn't that flags are redundant - they have their role in certain things - but to try to sum up the vast variety of culture and pride of country in one flag is impossible especially for a country like NZ. If you get the Maori and the Pakeha in, you'll forget about, oh, the a hundred other cultures which are as much NZ now as the 'original settlers'.

And to waste a huge sum of money to do so, and take part in the forever inconclusive argument over it is absurd. Such a flamboyant gesture (the chopper) is pointless in my eyes. More about Flying the Fern Flag
