The Weekend Starts Here

Dan Sadgrove

Dan rock n rolled for 10 years, studied Ethnomusicology at varsity, guest dj's on the odd occasion (he says he'd rather be on the d floor) and was previously in charge of music at Alt TV. Got any new music you'd like him to check out email him dan.sadgrove@getfrank.co.nz.

Alright the weekends about to start so lets strap your boogie boots on and start dancing with convulsions in everybodies all-time favourite drunken 'I don't give a toss where my flailing arms land' stupor. You probably haven't heard of some of these artists but I'm playing the DJ now so give them a try.

Let's start with some international flavour and it's a Portugese rock outfit with their latest release, On the Radio. Soulwax have referred to these guys as the most underrated band in the world. Lyrically you can't get simpler than this "I hear a song on the radio/I hear it ten times a day/I hear the songs on my way to work/I hear again and again," which makes it perfect for kick starting the party because it's easy to pick up and everybody loves singing loudly. Or my favourite - screaming karaoke.

X Wife - On the Radio

Passion Pit - The Reeling

This American Electronic band just released their first album, Manners, last week. Big ups from the headphone critics so far with Metacritic (think Rotten Tomatoes for music) scoring it over 80%. Bombaklaut.

The Bloody Beetroots ft. Steve Aoki - WARP

Spiderman mask wearing Italian Electro group with heavy Justice influences, you may have heard their track, Butter, if you've ever played FIFA 09. I haven't.

Kitsune and The Cobrasnake present Classixx feat. Jeppe - I'll Get You

Mark 'The Cobrasnake' (did he give himself that nickname?) Hunter directs and Kitsune remixes this Classixx track. If you like this below you can download Classixx's new mix here and their first mix tape here. Kitsune Maison rules, here's a video teaser of his upcoming 7th compilation.

Crystal Stilts - Love is a Wave

Brooklyn garage-pop bands latest release. Directed by Army of Kids. Not an actual army of kids I hope.

Suckers - Easy Chairs

Directed by a guy called Chubbard - I can see myself singing along to this, maybe.

Modest Mouse - Satellite Skin

Directed by Kevin Willis (of Tool fame). Sounds like one of those songs where you can picture yourself beading up a real good drunken sweat in the corner of someones lounge singing this into a bottle, or hairdryer, or whatever - without knowing any of the words - not that that happens to me, but you get the idea.

Harmonic 313 - Battlestar feat. Phat Kat and Elzhi (remix)

Finally, a little bit of crazy hip hop to end it here. I like the technique they use here, but it's making me dizzy which probably isn't a good video to end on, but I'm going to.
