When you narrow everything about bodybuilding down to one thing, it's all about packing on more muscle. Of course, you want to get that muscle on your body while keeping body fat levels low, but you have to put on muscle. Unless you are a huge person, eating more than 150 to 200 grams of protein probably won't give you any additional muscle growth in the long run.

How Often Should I Eat?

Bodybuilders should think about their bodies like a machine. In order to keep fueling the internal processes that build muscle, you have to eat food high in protein consistently throughout the day. The best diets for bodybuilders are often comprised of four to six smaller meals every day. Instead of overdoing your caloric and protein intake at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, try balancing your entire nutritional intake over four to six smaller meals in order to get the best results from your workouts. Each meal should contain between 20 and 35 grams of protein, in addition to other healthy foods that your body needs.

Which Foods Are the Best Sources of Protein?

You don't want to be limited when it comes to your food choices, but you should be disciplined. A typical hamburger is loaded with protein, but you also get the unwelcome baggage of unneeded fats and complex carbohydrates (from the bun), while a skinless chicken breast will give you the same amount of protein, but without all the extras that your body doesn't really need. This doesn't mean that your diet has to be bland or boring. You have a lot of choices when it comes time to eat food high in protein. Tuna is a great food for bodybuilders. Lean beef, like round steak, is another great choice for bodybuilders. While a t-Bone may sound more appetizing, you have to remember that the round steak is a leaner cut that will give you lots of protein.

A solid bodybuilding diet should be designed to put muscle on your body while minimizing any fat gains. It can be a challenge to find the right balance without feeling like you are depriving yourself, but it can be done. If you mix your diet up a bit and continue to eat food high in protein, you should have no problem sticking with your diet. If you've been doing the same old chicken breast and a salad for lunch every day for a month, try changing things up a bit to keep yourself from getting stuck in a rut. When you get too frustrated with your diet, it is far too easy to go overboard and indulge on foods that should be avoided. Be consistent, but don't be afraid to try new foods that are high in protein and healthy, too.
