People love candy bars. There's something about chocolate being processed, combined with other ingredients, like peanut butter, and being formed into a rectangular snack that is deeply imbedded into our culture. Of course, we all know that candy bars shouldn't be a regular part of our diets. Having a guilty snack once in a while is alright, but you certainly don't want to eat candy bars every day.

76As much as people know that candy bars are bad for them, since they are such a popular and easily accessible snack, people can't seem to stay away from them. Perhaps the love affair people have with candy bars explains why so many health food and supplement companies make healthier alternatives. Since people seem to gravitate toward sweet foods in the popular bar shape, it's no wonder that granola bars, cereal bars, and low carb protein bars are such a popular alternative. With the exception of high protein low carb bars, none of these foods are going to do much for your physique. If you do have a bit of a sweet tooth, or like to eat on the run, however, protein bars are the way to go.

The Evolution of the Protein Bar

Today you can find some pretty remarkable high protein, low carb bars. This wasn't always the case though. Like other nutritional supplements, protein bars have gone through a rapid evolution over the past twenty years. The first attempts at making a high protein snack bar, while clearly well intended, just didn't produce a very savory end product. The original protein bars, like the older protein drinks, had a chalky taste. In addition to the texture, and perhaps even worse, was the taste of the original protein bars. They were usually so thick and chewy that your jaw would hurt after a few bites. The whole idea of a nutrition bar is to produce a snack that people can eat on the run. The first supplement bars were anything but convenient. It often took a half hour to chew one up and get it down.

The low quality of protein supplement bars didn't last. As people started to become more interested in sports supplements, more research and development went into producing bars that were packed with protein and tasted good too. The second wave of protein bars were definitely easier to eat than the first go around. Unfortunately, the recipe for these bars often called for a lot of sugar, additives and other ingredients that weren't very nutritious. In the quest to make a protein bar that tasted good, the pendulum swung back toward making a product that was closer to an actual candy bar than today's high protein low carb bars. Again, this was just a phase in the evolution of the protein bar, but it too would pass.

The High Protein Low Carb Bar Arrives at Last

Eventually protein bars that tasted good and had a better texture, without being loaded with sugar, simple carbohydrates and other junk were being manufactured. It took a while for the top supplement companies to get things right, but once they did the end results were unbelievable. Today there are super nutritious protein bars that are jam packed with high quality proteins that also taste great. The perfect combination had finally been discovered and the bodybuilding world rejoiced. It's easy to take for granted how easy it is to find great tasting high protein, low carb bars, since they are pretty common today. It was a long time coming, but there are finally high protein low carb bars available that are true sports nutrition supplements for serious athletes and people trying to get in shape.

A Solid Protein Source

A lot of bodybuilders, both seasoned and rookie, tend to try and get every bit of their protein from protein drinks. The protein powders and drinks available today, like their protein bar counterparts, are head and shoulders above the products available a generation ago. However, no one who is serious about putting together a winning diet plan should try to get all of their protein through powders and drinks alone. Sure, a protein drink can be one of the easiest, most efficient ways of getting lots of protein in one quick shot, but it should not be the only protein source in one's diet. That's what makes protein bars so great. You can easily take a protein bar along with you for a convenient, high protein snack. A high protein low carb bar tends to battle the hunger pangs that often accompany diets a lot better than protein drinks alone. It's a good plan of attack to eat a healthy, high protein, low carb diet that is rich in whole foods coupled with protein drinks and high protein low carb bars. This approach to dieting allows you to get ample amounts of protein that you need in order to promote serious muscle growth.

Pay Attention to Labels

While protein bars and other supplements have come a long way, it's still important to choose high quality products. There are some, so called "healthy" protein bars on the market that are just glorified candy bars. These bars may have a few grams of protein in them, but the protein is often low grade and the bars are often times loaded with sugar. Don't settle for this kind of supplement bar. To build larger, stronger muscles and burn fat at the same time, you need a high quality protein bar that is not filled with sugar and other unhealthy additives.

Supplements should be a part of your eating plan, if you are serious about building muscle and burning fat. Be sure to include a good protein drink, like Profect from Protica and find a high protein low carb bar to add to the mix. These types of bars are a great way to add a little bit of variety and fun to your diet. A good high protein low carb bar is a real treat when you've been eating tuna and chicken breast all day. You'll almost feel like you're cheating on your diet, but you'll still be getting the protein and nutrients your body depends on for burning fat and building muscles.
