No one really knows exactly how the first beer came into being... Suffice it to say that, around 10,000 years ago, somebody let a primordial barley and hop concoction stand long enough for it to ferment. I thought rule of thumb was from only being allowed to strike your wife with a stick or thatch no wider than you thumb back in the late 1800's early 1900's.

Love the part about the father giving the brides husband beer a month after the wedding! is that like a reward or something? and all the beer he could drink! Imagine if that were the case today! and the bride wasn't allowed to drink at all....somehow I can't see that working in today's world!

Must admit the picture of a traditional English country pub made me come over all nostalgic and teary-eyed. Indeed, there are few things in life that come close to the pleasure of a pint of hand-pulled bitter, served naturally chilled by good cellar conditions, with a half inch creamy head, and complete with that natural yeasty fermentation aroma. Even better when accompanied by a picked egg or a packet of pork scratchings!
