Thoughts on the perfect martini ?

I must admit martini's are definitely an acquired taste. However James Bonds style has left a lasting impact on my vision of a classy drink. I have tried the two staples of gin and vodka. I was wondering if there were any suggestions on how to make the perfect martini and also any worthy variations ? Thanks in advance.

Always with an olive in it.

Straight up!!!

Just been learning on QI about all the different names for martinis - bradford, the vesper (with some vodka), gibson etc. Who knew? They all sound worth a shot!

The perfect martini is often subjective, what tastes best to you is what is best kinda thing. Much arguement goes into how to make the perfect martini but generally it comes down to either shaken or stirred, and ratios range between 2:1 to 20:1. The first part being gin and the second vermouth. Experiment to find what you like and make sure you tell your bartender how you want it, otherwise don't cry when he gets it 'wrong'. A good recipe from "the cocktail keys" is 7 parts gin and 1 part dry vermouth. They're very specific on the prep as they say "put vermouth in with ice and stir 20 times" then drain, add gin, stir another 20 and place in the glass.
