New restaurants - trending now

In cities like Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch it's quite normal to see new restaurants come and go. So many, often after expensive refits, go through a phase of being flavour of the month before waning in popularity and then disappearing. The trends are interesting to watch - in the Wellington region new Vietnamese and Mexican outlets seem to be the next new thing, but will they last the course? A few old favourites like Matterhorn, Green Parrot and Siem Reap still draw the crowds - how do they manage to do so while so many others fade away?

Just spent a week in Wellington, and it was a real treat to try out the different flavours of our Capitol. We love the Flying Burrito Brothers. Great 2 for one specials during the week, but it's the flavour and fulfillingness of the meal that wins us over. Reputation for great food, value, and atmosphere is a winning combination in my mind. On the other hand, you can get a good feel for a restaurant that is on the slippery slope to failure. They lack attention to detail and lack routines to get some of the basics right. We ate at 2 restaurants that I would never go back to.

If they keep their prices down (restaurants seem far more expensive in larger cities) people will keep going back if they provide quality food. If the owners can't afford to do this then they shouldn't be in business. Never expect the customer to pay for all your bills.

Want to go to Mexico in wellington. Love some Mexican food. Have been told its always busy though and they don't take reservations. Might wait until the hype has gone down a little
