Epic Camping spots...

Kia ora, So I have some family coming over from the UK in a few weeks and early December we're wanting to all go camping. Can anyone suggest any epic camping spots around the North Island? I know there must be heaps and there are a few online but you never know till you get there more often than not! Any recommendations would be great!

id really prefer to keep a secret but i like Port Jackson in the Coromandel. The drive along the coast is rugged thus unspoilt by development and population. Port Jackson has "natural" toilets and cold water showers (can hang your solar shower in here as well) which are well kept by the onsite D.O.C manager. You can pitch your tent on the grass which can be very close to the sandy beach. The few Christmases i was there a few dolphins would be roaming the bay(in the shallow) in the morning and again in the evening. Very safe beach for kids ie no rip surf. Good for fishing and fairly safe exploring around the coast. The wind can get up a fair bit late afternoon. and the drive is along a narrow and unsealed roads for about 45min but I love it. looking forward to returning this Christmas. see you there.

What kind of thing are you looking for? I'm keen to find some more rustic ones that are still suitable for kids. We go to the Waihi Beach Top Ten, which is freaking expensive but the kids love it. It used to be cheap and simple when I was a kid... no longer the case. We need more options so we can go camping for more than a few nights a year.

BAY OF ISLANDS :) - far north Lovely in the summer, fantastic beaches! So much to love.

Quinneys bush , Nelson , the way a campsite ought to be

nelson .. now in the north island haha i tend to free camp but ahipara is fun or the bluff along 90 mile (has an honesty box) round taranaki i have a few other secret spots that ill take to the grave haha like this one

Wow that's a beautiful spot. I've never been to the N.I but down here in Dunedin the best place for camping would have to be Harwood or up Highcliff somewhere.

Holy crap that's beautiful Jabes! What a sight to wake up to! :)

The "Surf Highway" (SH45 for those not in the know) is a little stretch around the knob on the west coast that is called taranaki. Begin your journey at New Plymouth. Avoid the local 'delicacies' and your adventure will be sure to start off chlamydia-free. Travel south in the trusty old Bongo making sure to hit each beach you come across. Oakura, Okato, Oaonui, Opunake. Pitch the tent on a nice grassy patch next tp the beach, light a bonfire, catch a few undersize fish and you're away laughing. Finish the trip in Hawera at the pub with a few pints of Naki Gold. Beauty...

You have to go up North, especially Doubtless Bay. Matai Bay has a great Doc camp with the basics, cheap to camp there too. Clear water, white sands and great fishing too.

Yeah Matai Bay is awesome. Last time we went up we caught a massive snapper cooked it strait on the BBQ, had dolphins come into the bay. Great camp site they have a guy come round every day and sell ice to keep the meat and beers cold... highly recommended

Thanks Shaun, yah I've heard up North is unsurpassed so either up there or the coromandel probably my top pics so far... God I can't wait for summer! Sunshine, cicadas, chilled out sounds, sleeping under the stars.... Love it

Golden Bay near Nelson is superb. If you want something a bit closer to Auckland, i really like Waikawau Bay in the Coromandel, I think it's a DOC campsite and is probablt more family oriented than yahooing young teenagers

Have had lots of great holidays and good fishing at Kuaotunu in the Coromandel

....would have to say any where a long the Gisborne / East Coast of the North Island is breath taking during the summer and weather is just georgous.....but you have to get in fast because all the spots are usually taken up pretty quick...with Rhythm and Vines and all around the New Year but right through the East Coast they have some beautiful stunning camping grounds...one of my favourites is Anaura Bay camping ground just north of Gisborne....a little secluded bay....they turned the old school into the Anaura Bay camping ground and is just a couple of minutes walk to the beach and it is always full to capactiy....some book way in advance.....the atmosphere is wonderful, summer on the East Coast is excellent and the locals are great.... ...Heres are picture of Anaura Bay....if your ever that way you should check it out....

...heres another angle of the bay......you can see in the middle of this picture a red roof the camping ground is directly to the left of those buildings...hidden by the hill....
