Women and children first?

The aftermath of the sinking of the cruise liner the Costa Concordia earlier this month has focused on the extraordinary behaviour of Italian Captain Schettino. As the disaster unfolded, Schettino allegedly ordered passengers back to their cabins. Furthermore, he was accused of sailing the ship far too close to the Italian coast and fleeing the stricken ship before the evacuation was complete. Of the later charge, Captain Schettino claimed he ‘fell into the lifeboat’. This story reminds me of a famous Winston Churchill quote given to a journalist from a New York newspaper who asked him why he chose to travel on an Italian line when the Queen Elizabeth under the British flag was available. After due consideration Churchill replied: 'There are three things I like about Italian ships. First, their cuisine, which is unsurpassed ; Second, their service, which is quite super; And then - in time of emergency - there is none of this nonsense about women and children first.'

....that Captain Schettino....was a gutless wonder wasn't he....lives were loss because he decided to show of to his family on the island and some girls who were on the bridge with him moments before he hit the rock...then he shows hardly any remorse for what occurred what a total douche!....he makes up all these different claims as to why he ended up on shore while passengers were fighting for their lives....he was a coward during the disaster at least me a man and put your hand up and say yes i did this and not prolong the families who lost loved one's grief....was also interesting to see the owners of the cruise liner trying to hurry up and move quickly with compensation for the passengers....I think there will be more than compensation talks going on from this disaster...such a sad loss I hope they definitely hold the captain accountable....am sure he has bought shame on his family for having no concern in the world about what happened...and worrying about himself....arrogance!

He's gutless alright & talk about taking his time to give orders. I bet they make a movie soon portraying him as the good guy, ha.

A good captain always goes down with his ship.

Maybe that's now only the case in story books.

I dont' think they have to go down with the ship, but they should be the last off, one would assume... Even Startrek adheres to that, and they are from the future!!

hey women want equal rights so hey they can stay with the men! hehehehe children first and italian captain 2nd! hehehe

Haha, I had never read that comment about Churchill. The captain is responsible for the lives of all those on the ship, when he is employed..he is aware of that, he is trained for that. He certainly failed in his responsibilities, but I guess a disaster like that sorts out the boys from the men. He'll have to live with the shame of his actions for the rest of his life. Definitely children first...not sure about some women though!

Survival of the fittest should come are the elderly, women and children. Shame on the Captain, his family have to live with his bad decision for the rest of their lives also. Why should children be tarred with the same brush as their parents.

Lessons learned here: In the end it comes down to the survival of the fittest, every man for himself.

The strongest and the fittest should always aid the weak, the young and the infirm but only to the limit of commom sense and personal safety. history is littered with dead heroes.

So true "the weak shall inherit the earth" after the heroes perish.
