Your Guide to Being a Modern Gent

There have long been certain interests and actions that pique the interest of guys. These are shifting and changing over time, but there are some old favourites that we would love to stick around for a lot longer. Think of all the dapper gents of yesteryear and how effortlessly cool they were. That’s the spirit we want to recapture.

So, without further ado, here is Get Frank’s guide to being the perfect modern gentleman.

Shave like a pro

Shaving is an art. It can take a while to master, especially if you are using the top tools for trade such as cut throat or safety razors. These are the razors of choice for guys, following criticism that mainstream ‘multi bladed’ razors can lead to skin irritation.

Safety razors and cut throat razors give a much closer and cleaner shave than the more popular mainstream blades. They were also the staple for shaving for decades before being ousted as the razor of choice by the likes of Gillette and Wilkinson Sword.

Get suited and booted

Being able to throw together a killer outfit is key. That’s not to say that you have to blow the budget on the latest fashion, as a simple plain white tee and jeans can look killer with a slight nod to 1950’s old school cool.

However, when the time comes to go all out, you should embrace it. Dress smartly and neatly and also make sure your suit fits properly. Looking like you’re about to hulk out of your jacket is never a strong look and you will find that you feel a lot more comfortable in a suit that fits. Although be warned - suit trousers definitely have a different feel to them than jeans, which may take some getting used to.

Indulge in forgotten pastimes

If you need inspiration, look at some things in the life of James Bond. Drinking whiskey and hanging out at the most exclusive clubs, bars and casinos is the order of the day. But they can be daunting at first. There are great guides for beginners about whiskey which run through all of the most popular variants and whiskey drinking terminology. So, you will be up to speed in no times.

Casino games can also be tricky to grasp at first. So, any newbies should stick with blackjack. It’s quick, easy and accessible. For those looking to step their gaming up a level, there are plenty of online blackjack card counting guides and tutorials available, which will teach you how to look for patterns and play the game intelligently.

Casinos can be luxurious and extremely exclusive, so it's also important to brush up on your table etiquette before you hit the roulette and card tables. Just remember to keep your cool and be courteous to your fellow players and the dealer. And remember, if you’re polite with the dealer, they will be polite back. These are the people who have the power to boot you from the table, so you’ll want to stay in their good books.

These are just a few ideas and we’re sure there are many more. Get in touch with us through the comments or social to let us know what else you think the modern gentleman should take on board.
