"Did I listen to pop music because I was depressed; or was I depressed because I listened to pop music?" This quote was generally referring to music from the 60s through 80s, a time when pop wasn't the pretentious, mainstream shit that it is now. We had songs like "Eleanor Rigby", "Old Man", "As Tears Go By" - this was popular music or pop, and depressing as hell. Now When I listen to modern pop I don't feel depressed, I feel physically ill, nauseated and pissed off.
I have another little maxim that is more relevant to today's music scene. "Why is bad music popular; why is popular music bad?" Now at first you may say, well
the two are one in the same but lets analyze the statement. Does bad music become popular, or does music once achieved popularity become bad? I will leave you to ponder, because I have another bone to pick - The Black Eyed Fucking Peas. Yes there were some decent songs in the band's anthology, Where Is The Love was one that hit the spot, but with The E.N.D the energy is anything but alive. How about The Energy Needs to Die, and should be put down in the least humane way possible. I turned on the radio and experienced "Rock Your Body" a song that is so terrible, awful, dreadful and a whole heap of other synonyms for bad, that the fact that anyone would choose to endure the torture completely loses my faith in the human race.
Ok I am being facetious, but honestly, can anyone tell me why he or she would choose to listen to it. And don't even get me started on "Boom Boom Pow," "Imma Be" or the omnipresent "I Gotta Feeling." Give me some of The Clash or Pearl Jam or Iggy Pop - Amen.
But you know, whenever I'm feeling truly embarrassed and ashamed of the fact my generation is responsible for The E.N.D. to be one of the longest running number one billboard albums of all time, I read some Nietzsche or Dostoyevsky. These are two pre-20th-century Russian guys that find it hard to, well find meaning in anything. Nihilism I believe it is called, and sometimes we all can relate to that feeling of hopelessness. The whole ‘what's it all about' paradigm.
If you Google ‘the answer to life, the universe and everything' you get 42. I would like to see how many of my readers understand that joke... anyone?
But isn't that where music is supposed to come in - music has the ability to change ones emotions, connect cultures and create peace - doesn't it? We all have songs that make us feel happy, hopeful and inspired. We all have our own "Don't Worry Be Happy," or "Walking On Sunshine." What's yours?
What music do you listen to when you want to feel good? I sure as hell don't turn on the radio when I'm in a somewhat bad mood, because then I feel physically ill, nauseated and pissed off. But I wouldn't dare pick through my collection of 60s or 70s pop either - Because true pop music makes us feel depressed, or is it the other way around?
I welcome all disagreements, different points of views, and general insults. Please feel free to share your own feelings on the state of modern music.
And to all of you who share my views - bless you.
