Fear in business

Jay Lincoln

Jay Lincoln is a holistic life coach.

Over the next few weeks I would like to share with you all some of the reasons small to medium businesses fail or never reach their full potential. I will also give you some tips on what to look for in businesses and also how you may be able to grow and expand your business or even look to start up your own. A common theme when working with a business is that normally the people who own or run them believe they are the business.

We also tend to spend a lot of time working in the business rather than working on the business. If you look at the basic principle of how we operate in the world, you will see that we take all the beliefs, habits, behaviors and attitudes we carry around every day into business. This usually makes the business start to play out in exactly the way we do not desire from life. This does not always happen immediately, yet over time you will see this take shape. So below is a list of questions you could ask yourself regarding the business!

What is reason for setting up the business?

How will the business grow and evolve over time?

Why is the business actually operating?

Who will be my target market?

How will the business service this market re: ongoing growth?

What skills and tools will the business require?

Where will I need to situate myself to allow the above to happen?

There are many more questions you could ask, yet this is a start. Once we are aware of answers we have come up with we can start to look at the business from another angle. We can also see what we may need to do differently to allow the business to be different! This is a good place to start that allows you to create a vision of the business. By creating a vision for the business this allow heaps more opportunities for the business to get where it is going quicker and more efficiently than no vision.

Let’s take the example of a motor in our car. Now imagine you do not work in this field yet have a limited knowledge and understanding of what motors require. So you start to do all the work to fix every problem, service the motor all the time and everything else that is required for the motor to continue, and then guess what? The motor will become you! I do not mean this literally, what I am talking about here is that because you have limited knowledge of motors and you are using the motor to increase your knowledge your motor will only be as good as your ability to keep it going. This also applies to your and business.

My suggestion would be to understand what the business requires of you and other people that would allow the business to unfold or to grow. You may also find that you can not be everything to the business and that you need to employ knowledge or tools that allow growth and stability. In doing this, you would have to allow yourself to trust and believe in others, develop strategies to maximize others’ potential as well as yours. From this point on, you then can work on the business rather than in the business.

Next week we will talk more on this topic and even have some simple exercises for you to try. Until then enjoy the week that will be, not the week that was.
