Frank catches up with Cori Goncalez Macuer

Cori is a comedian and actor from Wellington. He’s been doing comedy since 2003 and in that time have toured all over NZ, U.K and as far as the Middle East. He won the 2006 Billy T Award, which is pretty cool as he is also the youngest ever winner. Sometimes he does other stuff like acting and things. His latest shows include the Comedy Fest 2009 – “Promo Girls aren’t Models” and working as  a reporter and writer on Jono’s New Show.

So as a comedian in New Zealand you need to travel near and far, what area's are your favourite?

I'll been covering a few areas. Wanganui, Hamilton, Palmerston North to name a few. I've performed in these places many times over the years and they are unique. They're not the classiest or safest places I've been, but I've always left with heaps of new stories and new friends.

Is it an area that you would include if you were to organise a Tour around New Zealand?

Definitely.

Have you ever been on a Tiki Tour before?

Yeah I've done heaps. Mainly for comedy but every now and then we'll organise a holiday tour.

What do you feel is the appeal of actual tours? Why are they so popular?

I think they're good for lazy people who need organising and find it hard to make friends.

What’s the funniest thing that has happened in NZ last year?

Im a big fan of Moko the dolphin trying to smash people in Gisborne.

What’s the personal highlight of last year?

Doing a sold out festival show that got awesome reviews as well

And the lowlight?

Not sleeping enough during the festival

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given as a comedian?

If they don't think it's funny, fuck them. Not literally though.

What’s the one piece of advice you would give to someone doing their first ever gig?

Probably the same as above.

Who are your favourite NZ comedians?

Brendhan Lovegrove, Flight of the Conchords, Dai Henwood, Paul Ego, Jeremy Corbett, Jeremy Elwood

Where is your favourite comedy venue?

San Fran Bathhouse in Wellington

Where’s the oddest place you’ve performed?

One of my first gigs when i started out was for the NZ deaf society. They didn't get it.

What would you say to someone who tells you they “don’t like stand up comedy”?

Fair enough. I do it for a living and I hate it.

What song do you walk onstage to?

Here I Go Again - Whitesnake.

What is the one thing that would best help the future of NZ comedy?

I think taking comedy to small towns is a great way to make people aware of a comedy scene in nz. In auckland and wellington theyre taking it around colleges which i think is awesome.

What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview?

Who do you hate? I have a massive list.
