Transparent Image Backgrounds and How You Can Create Them

One of the more interesting design elements for images is when you utilize a transparent background. Essentially a transparent background will mean that the image will assume the background of whatever it is placed in front of – which can be interesting when used as part of a design.

The first thing that you need to know about transparent image backgrounds is that not all image formats support them. Generally the two most widely used formats that support transparent backgrounds are GIF and PNG – though BMP and TIFF support them too but tend to have much larger image sizes.

To create a transparent background, you will need to edit your photo and remove its existing background. That may sound easy, but it is actually a bit more involved than that as you will have to ‘select’ the subject and the background and delete the latter while preserving the former.

Although different editors use a variety of methods to achieve this goal, the normal way is to select whichever is easier (i.e. subject or background) and then invert the selection if it is the subject and delete the background. In some cases selecting the subject or background accurately can be difficult with the tools in most editors, and practice will be required to use them properly.

One easy way to make sure you can select the background without too much hassle is by making sure it is a solid (and uniform) color. Think of this as the same way ‘green screen’ effects are used in Hollywood blockbusters and replaced later on with other images. By using a uniform color as the background, you can easily isolate and select it with the tools in your editor and then delete it.

Of course some photo editors simplify the task of removing and replacing photo backgrounds further, and Movavi Photo Editor is one such. It can be used as a photo background remover with ease, as it will let you easily select the subject and the background by simply painting over them with two different brushes so that you can determine which to preserve and which to get rid of at the same go.

Aside from that Movavi Photo Editor will also let you edit your photo in numerous other ways – all of which are simplified and intuitive. With its features you could enhance the quality of images, apply artistic filters, insert customizable text fields, makeover portraits, remove objects, or transform the frame and orientation. All said and done, you will be able to fully determine exactly how you would like your image to look – and edit it quickly and easily without having to jump through any hoops.
