Avocados Pack A Big Health Punch for Men

TAURANGA, 19th December 2011: New Zealand men are being urged to add an avocado to their daily diets because it’s one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways they can look after their own health.

Fresh avocado is a powerhouse fruit containing 11 vitamins and 14 minerals, which are associated with the prevention of a raft of medical problems including prostate cancer, high cholesterol, low fertility and hair loss.

This ‘super fruit’ may also assist in maintaining a healthy bowel function, good eyesight, boost your memory and help control your appetite.

The advice comes as part of the nationwide Add An Avocado campaign, which is being run by the not-for-profit NZ Avocado Growers’ Association Inc. to raise awareness about their goodness and versatility of avocados. The campaign coincides with the largest bumper season of avocados in New Zealand ever.

NZAGA communications manager, Midge Munro, says few fruits can rival the nutritional benefits delivered by avocados.

“They’re packed full of vital nutrients which every healthy body needs. They are an excellent source of folate, which men need daily to maintain good health.  Folate is also essential for fertility.”

“Swapping butter for avocado on your sandwiches, spreading some onto crackers or chopping avocado into a salad is a delicious and easy way for men to maintain good heath,” says Munro.

“Avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fats needed to reduce cholesterol and are naturally low in sugar and sodium.”

Eating half an average sized avocado will give the average adult 27 per cent of their Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of folate, 15 per cent of niacin, 14 per cent of vitamin C, 13 per cent of vitamin B6 and 10 per cent of iron. They are also a source of vitamin A, B, E, and K, as well as copper, magnesium, fibre and zinc.

Avocados can be used in a multitude of ways, from smoothies, to salads, pizzas, omelettes and even soups – they provide delicious, healthy food on the go.
NZAGA has been providing recipes and nutritional information to the public, as well as working with agencies such as 5+ A Day Charitable Trust. For more, visit the NZ Avocado Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/nzavocado.
