Discussing :: Making marriage work

"The key to reviving or divorce-proofing a relationship is not in how you handle disagreements but in how you are with each other when you're not fighting." This is what John Gottman, professor of psychology and couples researcher has to say in his book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work  (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1999). Gottman's conclusions are based on over 16 years of studying couples as they live out a typical weekend. There are clear patterns of interaction that mark a relationship under real strain. Gottman uses these to predict which relationships will break up, and he has a 91 % rate of accuracy. This book identifies them... read full article

I have a wonderful marriage and these key things make it so great.
My wife is my best friend I tell her everything and she tells me everything 1. Communication

We do everything together like I said we are best friends so all the good times we have are together so that builds on our relationship rather than thinking you have fun with your mates take your wife you can still have fun but enjoy things together.

Now we have just had our 1st child. It is harder to do the little date things but make sure you have time for each other even if its just a cuddle on the couch and make sure you say I love you and make sure you mean it.

Life and Marriage are well worth treasuring

Lack of communication does not mean not talking, it means not talking about things that matter to you both.

Criticise less and make praise your power.

Forgiveness feels pain but doesn't hoard it.

Lose some arguments.

Let your children (if you have any) see that you respect eachother.

Try not to be completely predictable.

It is not only important to love, it is important to say so.

Try to accept what you cannot change and work out a positive.

Make time for love making and love.

Read "The sixty Minute Marriage" can be done in 60 minutes and works wonders!!!

My saying is "A happy wife, is a happy life". Just say yes 99% of the time.

I really think most of this stuff is a given - is it not part of loving someone and shouldn't it come naturally? I suppose over time people stop doing these things - but I think that it comes naturally and cannot be forced. If you do not feel like acting in these ways naturally then maybe forcing it won't help - will just cause bitterness and nagging.

the key to a good relationship is to create opportunities to have quality time together, kids, work and other demands on your time can sometimes leave you missing out on eachother..create time to spend with your partner and enjoy the things that bought you together in the first place
