Daddy the car mechanic was brought into this world by Wellington-based dads Scott Lancaster, Eric Mooij and Stefan Korn who recognised the need for a dedicated website for fathers. Based on their own experiences of struggling to find useful parenting related information specifically aimed at dads they created

Fathers, I hate to say it, but for the good of all your adorable daughters that you become her car maintenance instructor. When you do your next oil change - or do more than just wash your car - I beg you, begin explaining to your daughter how a car works, and name all the parts.

I can't tell you how much I wish my father taught me more about cars. I really don't know anything - I'm the typical woman (in this way, at least), in that I shrug and smile and nod at my mechanic and hope that they aren't ripping me off. I truly stand in awe of my male friends who can name off all the problems of their battered cars and say how long they can shove off fixing it. I have no benchmark for when anything goes wrong with my car. It could be something massively critical wrong with my car and I wouldn't notice - this happened once actually - I drove nearly four hundred miles in the snow with a bent rear axle and didn't realize. When I got to the garage they told me it's a miracle that my car survived the drive. It ended up being a $1500 repair.

Or it could be something small and stupid and the garage could exaggerate it and totally blow it out of proportion. I'd have no way of knowing! As an independent twentysomething, this really has me on edge - that in this one situation, I have to trust my livelihood to someone else, totally and completely. So my one advice to you, dads, is to do-it-yourself and get a little grease under your daughters fingernails. They'll thank you later, I promise.
