7-8 years ago my friend killed her friend and dog who were in the car with her at the same time as she was texting while driving. Until you have one of those experiences in your life having a mobile phone in your hand doesn't seem that bad. My friend was in a coma for a couple of months and still isn't right today, phones should be banned whether it is used for GPS, talking or texting.
  • Im just sick and tired of being almost run over every day by some dickhead who is too busy talking on his mobile phone than looking where he is going

I agree with the lawmakers on this one, talking on a cell phone without hands-free is downright dangerous and is banned in most countries. The ban on using even a dashboard mounted cell phone for GPS does have some merit as the cell phone screens are tiny compared with a proper GPS unit and would be far more distracting than a real GPS. Personally I would not object to ALL GPS units being banned, after all most require input from the driver... :(

I'm so glad this is being put in place

i support this law because you could just use your cell anyway, how would they police it? and for the people who drive poorly while doing so this gives the police a way to charge them.
  • First and foremost I think the government needs to rethink the way they worded the legislation from the standpoint of where and what is causing the accidents. Ok we have cellphone. How do they cause the accidents? The driver's concentration is shifted from the road to the cellphone itself. Then the provision should hence be, any cellphone usage which may shift the drivers complete attention off the road in a manner which may deem dangerous to others is prohibited. In which case we can safely argue for those who have it merely as a GPS device that they are simply listening out for on road instructions and does not compete for our attention. Now how hard was that......

I don't see why people have a problem with this new law?
    1) so much evidence points to the fact that humans are NOT as good at multi tasking as we think, and attentional brain resources are low
    2) when there is a need for the driver to be concentrating (e.g car suddenly stops ahead) that is the instance where diverted attention (to anything) will result in a problem/accident.

the new law is just to help lessen the chances of accidents on our roads. If you want to drive with a map in your lab and read off it as you drive, then dont complain when you crash and accept the consequences that come with it.

talking on a cell phone DOES bias the brain's attentional resources, particularly because the person on the other end is NOT with you, and so cannot react to events you are experiencing and bias your reading of a given situation.

eg. If you are talking with someone in the front seat, they may hear, see or feel that the environment has changed VS. person on the phone just keeps talking cos they have no connection with your environment.

I agree theres room for use of cellphones as navigation devices etc, but at the end of the day its not safe to be driving while so distracted and I wouldn't want others on the road heading towards me, if they weren't concentrating, so I have to go with the view thats its a reasonable law that will stop unnecessary road deaths.
  • Robert Katipa says
well hopefully they do change the laws on mobiles and driving, so many accidents are caused by people talking and txting while driving and the real annoying drivers tend to be people on there phones
  • oh well...seems a bit irish I guess.
