The new cellphone ban law will prohibit the use of the cellphone as a navigation device even if mounted on the dash of your car in acradle.

More about Stupid Nanny State Continues

  • i think the law is a good start, I have seen countless people trying to turn a corner or going through a round about while talking on the phone... They only have one hand on the steering wheel and if it's a manual, it makes the job harder...

    good law. i dare say.

I've been in a car too many times with people texting and yakking and losing their concentration on driving. I've nearly been into the back of car, the side of a car and on to the footpath and the few times I've asked the driver not to do it, has ended in a fight. I'm delighted this law has come in. OK some people can drive and use a phone. I couldn't. However, like any law, it's there to protect the innocent and if this helps, even if it is annnoying, so what.? When it comes down to it, we have survived without phones in cars for over fifty years so what's the big deal?
  • Banning using cellphones is really inevitable. And yeah, there'll be things that are grey areas, but hey have to start somewhere.
  • I think that it's a good thing to ban talking on the mobile while driving, it caused too many accidents. Don't understand though why using handsfree gps should be banned, too ... quite silly in fact. It's more dangerous to hold a map in your hand and try to read it while driving then to listen to your gps....
  • GPS devices can be quite a distraction while driving on top of phone calls. Considering that most of them don't give you the correct directions first time, you have to keep re-entering destinations as you go, making for some one handed/one eyed driving.

That being said, if we're going to allow GPS devices, Mobile phones being used for the same purpose should be allowed. Why pay the extra $$ if you can't use the features?
  • Its a great law. People shouldn't be driving and using their cellphones at the same time.
  • Richard Bracken says
It is already illegal in many counties, its about time we made it illegal aswell. I sometimes use my phone when driving but it is a distraction. I must say, i think its stupid if people get fined for using their phone as a GPS if it is mounted!
  • I think it needs to have some public feedback incorporated into it - this is another situation where it becomes obvious we need to develop more forums to incorporate public opinion into our legislative process. I mean online forums and feedback opporunities would be brilliant. Referendums are too costly (for tax payers!!!) and the processing the information seems to be inefficient!
  • Lynley Austen says
bout time. but clarification is necessary... what about when u r sitting at a traffic light?
  • jade says
No one should be texting or holding a cell phone wilst driving - but I dont see why a mounted phone should be a problem ... it's no worse than messing with a stereo.
  • Its bad enough doing one thing at once. Have almost been bowled down a road because a driver was texting.Time and a place
